What is Senior Citizen Card. How to Take it and Benefits

A Senior Citizen Card (or Senior Citizen Certificate) is an official identification document issued by state governments in India to individuals aged 60 years or above. It acts as a recognized proof of age and state residency, streamlining access to various financial subsidies, healthcare programs, and social welfare schemes without repetitive administrative paperwork.

Benefits of a Senior Citizen Card
Holding a Senior Citizen Card provides standard age-based concessions and state-specific priorities:
  • Banking & Finance: Grants an extra 0.50% interest rate on Fixed Deposits (FDs) and Recurring Deposits (RDs) across most banks.
  • Tax Exemptions: Allows a higher basic income tax exemption limit of up to ₹3 Lakh per annum.
  • Healthcare Support: Provides access to free or discounted medical treatments, generic medicines, and priority registration queues at government and empanelled private hospitals.
  • Travel Discounts: Offers lower fares or concessions for state-run road transport buses, specific airline tickets, and local transport.
  • Priority Welfare Access: Simplifies enrollment in central or state social assistance schemes like the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) and assistive device distribution programs.
  • Utility Perks: Gives priority status for registering new BSNL/MTNL telephone connections under special categories.
